Frequently Asked Questions
General
After you contact Expand Counseling for online therapy in Maryland, you can expect a response within one business day. I may ask for additional information and/or offer a free 15-minute consultation call.
This brief phone call allows us to discuss your goals, answer questions about EMDR, IFS, insurance, telehealth therapy, or professional consultation, and determine whether we’re a good fit. Taking the first step can feel vulnerable — my goal is to make it simple and supportive.
Standard sessions are 55 minutes. Shorter sessions may be appropriate depending on your needs. If you’re interested in extended sessions (longer than 55 minutes), we can discuss options in advance and tailor your care accordingly.
All sessions are provided via secure, HIPAA-compliant telehealth using SimplePractice. You’ll receive a private session link before each appointment.
Online therapy allows Maryland clients to access trauma therapy, EMDR, IFS, and anxiety treatment from the comfort of home. All you need is a private space, internet access, and a device with video capability.
Telehealth counseling is both convenient and highly effective for many mental health concerns.
Your first appointment is an Intake Session. During this initial meeting, we will:
Explore what brought you to therapy
Review relevant history
Clarify your goals
Begin developing a collaborative treatment plan
Whether you’re seeking trauma therapy, anxiety treatment, or support for chronic stress, this session helps us create a clear direction for your work together.
Research shows that telehealth therapy produces outcomes comparable to in-person counseling for concerns such as trauma, anxiety, and stress-related disorders.
In my experience providing online therapy in Maryland, the depth and quality of work can be just as meaningful as in-person sessions. Your comfort matters, however — and if in-person care is a better fit, I’m happy to provide referrals within Maryland.
To respect both your time and the time reserved for other clients, a minimum of 24 hours’ notice is required to cancel or reschedule an appointment.
Appointments canceled with less than 24 hours’ notice, as well as missed sessions, will be charged the full session fee of $170.
I currently accept United Healthcare and Cigna insurance plans. Please note that United Healthcare Medicaid plans are not accepted at this time.
If you plan to use insurance, I recommend verifying:
Mental health coverage
Deductible and copay amounts
Telehealth benefits
For private pay clients, the fee is $170 per 55-minute session. A superbill can be provided for possible out-of-network reimbursement.
If you have questions about insurance coverage or fees for online therapy in Maryland, you’re welcome to schedule a free consultation.
Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) is an evidence-based trauma therapy that helps the brain reprocess distressing memories so they no longer feel overwhelming or “stuck.”
EMDR therapy is commonly used for:
Trauma and PTSD
Anxiety and panic
Chronic stress
Distressing life experiences
Using structured bilateral stimulation, EMDR helps your nervous system integrate difficult memories in a healthier way. Many Maryland clients find EMDR to be a focused and powerful path toward trauma recovery.
Internal Family Systems (IFS) is a compassionate, evidence-based approach that views the mind as made up of different “parts” — such as an anxious part, a perfectionistic part, or a protective part.
In IFS therapy, we work with these parts gently and respectfully to help your system feel more balanced and regulated.
IFS therapy can be especially helpful for:
Trauma and attachment wounds
Anxiety and self-criticism
Emotional overwhelm
Chronic stress
This approach supports deeper self-understanding while promoting lasting emotional resilience.
